Deep research with receipts: how Raven reads the web and cites its sources

Ask Raven a question that needs the live web and it asks permission, reads the pages, and comes back with an answer whose numbered sources you can click and verify yourself.

Of all the things an AI chat can do, the one that has actually replaced a chunk of our own workdays is the least flashy: asking a question and getting an answer with receipts. Type something whose real answer lives on the live web, "which provinces passed AI procurement rules this year and what do the rules actually require", and Raven asks permission to research it properly, then goes and reads the web and comes back with a Sources section. Every claim is numbered. Every number is a link you can open.

The card that asks first

A research run takes longer than a chat turn, so Raven asks before starting. A small card appears, saying it would like to conduct deeper research on the subject, and nothing moves until you say yes. We were tempted to skip that step and just let it run. We kept it, because a tool that spends two minutes reading the web on your behalf should ask, the same way a colleague would.

While it works, a progress indicator says what is happening. What comes back is a structured answer with citations numbered in the text and a Sources list underneath.

Citations with receipts

The industry made "sources" a dirty word, with decorative links and invented references all over the place. So here is the deal we offer instead. Those pages were fetched and read by the system itself, and the answer follows what they say. When the answer claims a regulation passed in June, the attached citation opens the page that says so. Checking a claim should cost one click, not one argument. If we ever break that, the comments section will let us know.

When it kicks in

You can request research explicitly. The pleasant surprise is how rarely you need to. Current events, prices, versions, new papers: ask, and the web gets attached on its own. Paste a link and the page gets read, not guessed at. And the old comedy of an AI insisting it cannot browse, while you stare at it from a browser? Not here.

Not an upsell

The big labs charge their top tiers for research modes, which strikes us as backwards; the feature that most builds trust is the one you want everyone to try. In Raven it rides on your regular allowance, free tier included, and the reasoning streams alongside so you can watch the plan form.

Try one: open the Raven app and ask a question you would normally burn twenty minutes and six browser tabs on. Bring your skepticism. The Sources section is built for it.
